As September advances, the landscape shines with autumn's golden touch. On October 20, 2020, Landing Criminal Division held its inaugural Criminal Salon at Raffles City the Bund in Shanghai. The event, themed around the process and fees of criminal defense, saw participation from dozens of lawyers across Landing's various branches.
The salon was chaired by Ji Junhui, a lawyer at Landing Law Offices and a member of the Shanghai Lawyers Association's Criminal Procedure Law Committee. Keynote addresses were delivered by Pu Guiping, a lawyer with Landing's Criminal Law Department, a member of the Shanghai Lawyers Association's Criminal Committee, and a lecturer on financial crimes at Peking University Law School; Mei Man, a lawyer at Landing's Criminal Department, a special supervisor of Nanchang Municipal Bureau of Natural Resources and Planning, and a member of the High People’s Court of Jiangxi Province’s Criminal Case Appeal Expert Group; and Wang Ren, a lawyer at Landing's Criminal Department and a member of the Shanghai Lawyers Association's Criminal Compliance Committee. Pu Guiping emphasized the intricate nature of criminal defense, highlighting the importance of professionalism and workload as foundational elements for determining lawyer fees. Mei Man provided a comprehensive overview of the workflow across the investigation, review, prosecution, and defense stages, emphasizing the need for a meticulous approach to achieve optimal defense outcomes. In setting legal fees, it's imperative to account for variables that impact the quotation. Adjustments should be made holistically, reflecting both the intricacies of the case at hand and the proficiency of the assigned attorneys. Wang Ren, on the other hand, underscored the importance of tailoring defense strategies based on the unique characteristics of each criminal case and the concerns of the involved parties.
Among the participants who shared their perspectives were Zhou Wenjia, member of the 4th Shanghai Yangpu District Young Entrepreneurs Association, off-campus tutor of Shanghai University Law School and deputy director of Criminal Department of Landing; Ding Yanling, off-campus tutor of School of Economics and Management of East China Normal University, off-campus tutor of Shanghai University Law School and deputy director of Criminal Department of Landing; Wang Jun, secretary general of Criminal Department of Landing.
Zhou Wenjia integrated his practical case experiences with the insights he gleaned from the three guest speakers. He expressed his intent to incorporate their strategies into his team's management process. Ding Yanling, emphasizing professionalism and brand-building, stressed the importance of cultivating good work habits and adopting a differentiated approach. This, he believes, will highlight Landing lawyers' competitive edge, bolstering the Landing criminal defense brand—a move that would benefit every Landing criminal defense attorney. Wang Jun pinpointed professionalism, teamwork, documentation, and visualization as the pillars of successful criminal defense. By focusing on these core aspects, he believes they can enhance service quality, efficiency, and the overall brand image.
Concluding the event, Tian Lei, the Director of Landing's Criminal Department and a researcher associated with both the Chinese People's Public Security University and Xidian University, emphasized the invaluable nature of exchanges among criminal lawyers. He stressed that both successful experiences and lessons learned from failures offer profound insights, and the criminal defense endeavors aim not just for consistent brilliance but also for meticulous accuracy. Tian Lei further highlighted the importance of precision, differentiation, and standardization in Landing's criminal specialization, urging for a more streamlined approach to processes, documentation, and collaboration.
